As children in Polk County are getting ready to head back to school, officials are stepping up to make changes to a dangerous road where a student was hit and killed back in May.

Polk County and the Florida Department of Transportation are looking at ways to improve safety at the Clubhouse Road crosswalk where 17-year-old Kalen Kirk was hit and killed as he made his way across the street.

They are collecting information on vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area.

County Commissioners are reviewing areas that need additional lighting, especially near bus stops and school zones.

The county has installed a streetlight where the student was killed.

The Florida Department of Transportation study is expected to be finished by the end of the month. At that time, safety recommendations will be made to the county.
