"The Martian" is a 2011 science fiction novel and the first published novel by American author Andy Weir. It was originally self-published in 2011. Crown Publishing later purchased the rights and re-released it in 2014.

The story follows an American astronaut Mark Watney as he becomes stranded alone on Mars and must improvise in order to survive.

The novel has been described as an "Apollo 13" meets "Cast Away."

The film adaptation of "The Martian" is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain. It is scheduled to released in U.S. theaters on October 2, 2015.
