ABC Action News wants to help protect you from identity thieves, and right now, you can get a credit freeze for free.

Freezing your credit prevents thieves from opening credit accounts and applying for loans in your name. But freezing your credit also prevents you from doing those things. If you need to apply for a loan or credit card, you'll have to unfreeze your card.

There are three major credit companies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You'll have to call all three to freeze your credit.

Here's how to get in contact with each of the companies:

• TransUnion: Visit TransUnion.com/credit-freeze. The company also has a free-freeze mobile app called myTransUnion, available at the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

• Equifax: Visit https://www.Equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/. Or call its automated line at 800-685-1111.

• Experian: Visit www.Experian.com/freeze. Or call 1-888-EXPERIAN (1-888-397-3742).
