LUTZ, Fla. — One Tampa Bay area mega church announced it’s stepping up efforts to assist its roughly 15,000 members affected by COVID-19.

Ken Whitten – known by his congregation as Pastor Ken – told ABC Action News that staffers and volunteers at Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz are planning to call or email every member of the congregation over the next two weeks.

“Give them a call and ask them a couple of questions: How are you doing? How can we pray for you? And number three, what is it you need?” said Whitten about outreach efforts.

The church has organized a team of 100 volunteers to check on senior worshippers and offer to help deliver groceries and medicine.

Whitten said the church is assisting members who say they need financial help after being hit with layoffs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
