Apple has issued a voluntary recall for millions of wall plug adapters over concerns they could break and create an electrical shock risk, the company said.

The two-pronged wall plug adapters included in the recall were sold in Continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Argentina and Brazil between 2003 and 2015 with Macs and certain iOS devices, according to a website Apple set up to handle the recall. The Apple World Travel Adapter Kit, which was sold in the United States, is also included in the recall.

"Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to exchange affected wall plug adapters with a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge," Apple said in a statement on Thursday.

Apple advised customers that an affected wall plug adapter will have four or five characters -- or no characters -- on the inside slot where it attaches to the Apple power adapter. Apple did not say how many of the affected wall plug adapters have been sold.

Customers will be able to exchange their adapters for a redesigned one at an Apple store, where it's recommended they schedule a Genius Bar appointment, or at an authorized Apple Service Provider. They can also contact customer support.

Before exchanging the wall plug adapter, be sure to also have the serial number handy of the Apple device it was shipped with, Apple advised.
