“The world will be watching.”

That phrase was printed across the top of “The Hunger Games” movie poster in 2012, and it turned out to be possibly the most accurate tagline ever.

Two films into the four-movie saga adapted from author Suzanne Collins’ best-selling books, “The Hunger Games” has already made $832.6 million in the United States alone. The series is on pace to make over $3 billion worldwide, putting it alongside some of the most lucrative franchises in movie history.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” hits theaters this week, with the odds ever in its favor to debut at number one.

Where does the franchise rank among other popular movie series that were also based on books, after two entries? So far, it has decimated them.

In case you’re wondering about how “Divergent” stacks up after only one movie — it made just over $150 million in the United States this year, about $258 million fewer than the first installment of “The Hunger Games.”
