LISTEN: Sam Smith releases James Bond theme song

Posted

The theme song to the upcoming James Bond movie "Spectre" was released on Friday. "Writing's on the Wall" is sung by 23-year-old British pop star Sam Smith.

The release comes just over a month before the film is released in U.S. theaters on November 6.

Choosing Smith to sing the theme was a change for Bond films. He is the first British male singer to sing a Bond movie theme since Tom Jones belted out "Thunderball" five decades ago.

"I hope that people aren't expecting for me to be bringing out a like big pop song because that's not what I wanted to do here," said Smith. "I wanted to do something timeless classic that works with the project and the film."

In an interview with The Sun newspaper, Smith said "Spectre" director Sam Mendes contributed to the song's lyrics to make sure Bond "sounded powerful."

Smith said singing "Writing's on the Wall" is already one of his career highlights.

"I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy," Smith wrote of becoming part of the 007 legacy.
