Earth Day 2017: Celebrate the planet with these events

Roughly 93 million miles from the sun, Earth has the perfect conditions to support life. It's the only planet we have, so on April 22 this year, we're celebrating it!

The Bay area is full of cleanup projects, festivals and environmental events you can get in on to show appreciation for our planetary home.

Green Celebration Honoring 47th Anniversary of Earth Day

  • Friday, April 21 from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at Lake Mirror Promenade in Lakeland
  • Live music from reggae band Jah Movement
  • Exhibits promoting green living initiatives
  • FREE

Tidy up with Kensington Park Community Cleanup

  • Saturday, April 22 from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Kensington Park in Sarasota
  • Dumpsters available at Tee Rd. & Tee Lane intersection, Prudence Dr. & Melgert Lane, Randa Blvd. & 24th Pkwy
  • Hazardous materials including paint, auto parts, electronics only accepted at Tee Rd./Tee Lane location or Sarasota County Chemical Collection Center at 8750 Bee Ridge Rd.

Bartow Great American Cleanup

  • Saturday, April 22 from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Mary Holland Park in Bartow
  • Nationwide cleanup initiative led by Keep America Beautiful
  • Volunteers provided with garbage bags, gloves and safety vests
  • Those who pre-register may qualify for free t-shirt and ticket to Bok Tower Gardens

City of Largo Neighborhood Cleanup

  • Largo Solid Waste will have dumpsters at the corner of Rosery Rd. NW and Clearwater Largo Rd. for yard waste, construction debris, tires, tree limbs, furniture, electronic waste
