There is now a free phone application that can help track biker and runner patterns to help provide the Florida Department of Transportation important information for safety.

FDOT recently purchased data fromStravathat allows them to track traffic patterns for bicyclists, walkers, and runners.Stravaadvertises their app as, "the social network for athletes."

The data will be one tool for FDOT to know preferred routes, higher traveled areas and what the biking community needs.

The information will help FDOT improve infrastructure.

"We've used it recently to implement a safety project on Gulf Blvd. in Pinellas County," said Matt Weaver, engineer with FDOT.

The free app shows you a map in your area that highlights nearby bike paths, routes and roads that people are either using or recommend.

"You can share your experience too with your friends or people around your network," said USF research associate for Center for Urban Transportation Research.
