The structure towers 430 feet above Tampa Bay and stretches over 4 miles from St. Pete to Bradenton. Though the bridge was born out of disaster.

On May 9, 1980, a freight ship crashed into the bridge and knocked over 1,000 feet of it into the water. Thirty five people lost their lives on that tragic day.

The old bridge was demolished and a $244 million replacement was built.
