Deputy killed in accident in Hardee County while returning home from hurricane shelter

A Hardee County deputy and a motorist were killed in a two-car accident early Sunday morning, the Hardee County Sheriff's Office said. 

According to the Sheriff's Office, 42-year-old Deputy Julie Bridges had been working at a local hurricane shelter. The Sheriff's Office said she was driving home to pick up some items, then returning to the shelter.

The 13-year veteran of the Hardee County Sheriff's Office was from Zolfo Springs. 

The driver of other car, whose name has not been released, was an employee of the Florida Department of Corrections. There were no other passengers in either vehicle.

The incident took place at State Road 66 and Old Crewsville Road in Hardee County. Bridges was behind the wheel of her cruiser in the crash.

Hardee County was in a curfew at the time of the accident.
