Halloween without pumpkins: The Great Pumpkin Flood

It's hard to imagine Halloween without a jack-o-lantern, but that's exactly what would happen if the Great Pumpkin Flood of 1786 were to occur today.

More than 200 years ago, torrential rainfall in eastern Pennsylvania caused the Susquehanna River to flood.

The flood waters washed away entire pumpkin crops and unharvested corn in addition to homes and tree branches.
