The U.S. Justice Department and city of Miami have reached a comprehensive settlement agreement in a civil rights case stemming from police shootings from 2008 to 2011.
A Justice Department news release says Miami commissioners approved the settlement Thursday.
The agreement follows an investigation that identified a pattern of excessive force. A 2013 report questioned 33 Miami police shootings, including seven black men and teenagers who were killed over a short time span.
Under the settlement agreement, the city will implement comprehensive reforms to ensure constitutional policing and support public trust. The settlement agreement is designed to minimize officer-involved shootings and to more effectively investigate officer-involved shootings that do occur.
A court-appointed monitor, former Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor, will oversee the Miami Police Department's compliance.
