A geologist at Florida International University is putting the earthquake that struck between Cuba and Jamaica in perspective.

Dr. Grenville Draperwith the FIU Department of Earth and Environment described the magnitude 7.7 quake this way: "7.7 is pretty high, you want to compare it to the classic 1906 earthquake in San Francisco that was an 8.0 maybe a little more so this is a pretty significant earthquake."
He added: "You do get large earthquakes very occasionally and by that I mean like decades apart. This is one of the biggest that's occurred in that region in my 41 years in South Florida."
