It happened at about 7:15 p.m. near E. Thompson Rd. and E. Votaw Rd.
Deputies say the suspect did break into at least one other home and tried to break into others.
Sheriff John Mina says the deputy's children were in the home at the time of the incident.
The deputy has been on the force for two years. She shot the suspect multiple times and ultimately handcuffed him.
That suspect will "probably survive," according to the Sheriff.
"This could happen to anyone, but our deputies are trained to protect themselves, protect our communities," the sheriff said. "This person broke into a deputy's home with an axe, and who knows what his intentions were. But anyone like that is gonna be met with lethal force by our deputies, and I think she did a great job."
