Fisherman dies after jumping into water to retrieve lost pole in Florida

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. -- Riviera Beach police said a man died Sunday after jumping into the Intracoastal Waterway on Singer Island to retrieve a fishing pole that he dropped in the water.

Police said the victim was fishing Saturday at 9:55 p.m. on a small bridge connecting Singer Island with the mainland, when he jumped into the water to retrieve his pole.

Officers responded to the scene and were unable to locate him.

The Riviera Beach Police Department's Marine Unit, along with multiple other agencies, searched for him.

His body was located and recovered at approximately 11:10 a.m. about 200 yards north of the bridge where he jumped by the Riviera Beach Marine Unit and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit/Dive Team.

The victim's name has not been released at this time.

The incident is still under investigation.
