A woman and 5-year-old child were shot Saturday at a “Stop the Violence” event in Avon Park.

The shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. near Aline McWhite Park at 240 Hal McRae Blvd.

Groups of men from Avon Park and Sebring had gathered near the park, according to law enforcement, and shots were fired between them. Those gathered for the event ran in every direction to escape the gunshots.

The child was struck in the arm and the 20-year-old woman was hit in the back while running from the gunshots.

The child was taken to Florida Hospital Heartland for treatment and has been released.

The woman was taken to a regional medical facility for further treatment.

Jaquarius Nagee Watson, 22, of Sebring is the only suspect charged in the incident so far. He faces a charge of aggravated battery, firing a weapon in public, firing a weapon into a vehicle and aggravated battery on a child. He was being held Sunday at Highlands County Jail.

"Detectives have identified other suspects and are actively continuing their investigation," Highlands County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Mark Schrader said.
