About two dozen people gathered Sunday afternoon at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Tampa for Operation Love Letters.

“This is a celebration of those we’ve lost,” said organizer Bernard Goss.

Families of fallen soldiers gathered at the park to share stories of their loved one and to write them letters.

“They write about funny stories or something recent that happened,” said Goss.

Yolanda Mercado lost her son Jalfred in Afghanistan in 2011.

“I just want to say to him how much I miss him and I’m doing everything I can to keep his memory alive,” said Mercado.

The families also made their loved one’s favorite dessert to share with each other.

“We want to just relax and have a picnic and just reflect,” said Mercado.

Organizer said Operation Love Letter is an annual event.
