A Tampa man was arrested early Sunday after he struck and killed a pedestrian, left the scene and then called 911 to turn himself in.

The pedestrian was struck in the northbound lane of N. Nebraska Avenue around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday. The driver of the vehicle left the scene.

Tampa Police say that the preliminary investigation indicated that the car was traveling at an excessive speed, which contributed to the crash and the fatality.

Roughly 19 minutes after the crash, Ruell Thompson, 22, called 911 to report that he struck someone on N. Nebraska Avenue.

Tampa Police arranged to meet Thompson. The subsequent investigation led to his arrest.

The victim was later identified as 45-year-old Therese Nicole Ingram.

Thompson was charged with DUI Manslaughter after the fatal hit-and-run.
