Program aims to teach kids multiple languages at low cost

Posted

Learning multiple languages is often expensive for kids, with tutors or private schools. Hillsborough County public schools offer free lessons in high school. One local mother is working to make foreign languages accessible to all kids.

“I want to speak about 20 languages,” 6-year-old Naya Daniels said.

These kids have big goals and now, a way to learn multiple languages.

“It just breaks my heart that we don’t have language education in our public school system until high school at that point it’s really too late,” Chantelle Daniels, founder of ReDefiners World Languages, said.

Daniels said she failed to find affordable education with multiple languages for her own kids. ReDefiners offers camps and after-school programs in Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic, without a high price tag.

“There were a couple of private schools that me as a middle-class American, working at a university, can’t even afford, I said this is an injustice, it’s not fair,” Daniels said.

Now they're raising scholarship money so more kids can learn for free. They're looking for supplies, electronics and volunteers.

Main Need:

  • School/Craft Supplies
  • Refrigerator
  • Transport Vehicle (16 passenger van or small school bus)
  • Computers/Tablets

If you'd like to help you can drop off supplies to ReDefiners World Languages at 2156 University Square Mall, Tampa, FL 33612.

Summer Camp Scholarships are $175 a week per child. After-School Scholarships are $260 for a 9-week session; 2 days per week; 1.5 hours per day.
