Dozens of independent movies are playing in Ybor city this weekend. It's the 10th annual Gasparilla International Film Festival. There are comedies, documentaries, and shorts. This year the organizers are also doing a category with films focusing on Cuban culture.
"We have such a rich Cuban heritage here in Tampa," said organizer Monica Varner.
Several of the movies are documentaries showcasing Cuban Culture. Ron Chapman said his movie "The Forbidden Shore" showcasing Cuban musicians.
"This movie gives you an overview of the breadth of music that is available in cuba, everything from rumba to rap," said Chapman.
He also look at how politics impacted the Cuban population.
"I made it for the rest of the people in the world for the Americans who haven't had a relationship with cuba," said Chapman.
The Gasparilla International Film Festival runs through Sunday evening. Click here for a schedule of events.
