TAMPA, Fla. -- If you hit the friendly skies Thursday, you no doubt ran into plenty of crowds. Millions of travelers are expected to pack airports over the holiday season. That was certainly the case at Tampa International on Thursday.

Administrators at the airport told ABC Action News, the most important thing for travelers to do is check the status of their flight before they even get to the airport.

Make it to the airport at least 90 minutes before hand. Thursday was one of the busiest travel days of the year as most folks try to make it home for the holidays.

Due to weather issues across the Midwest and Southern region of the country, travelers can expect to be faced with a few delays.

A few tips that can help you when you arrive to make the process a bit easier. Don't wrap any gifts that you carry on the plane, because you'll be required to open them at the gate. Also, think about what you're wearing. Metal clothing or metal jewelry are likely to require additional screening. Many of the travelers that spoke with ABC Action News said they can prepared.

"So far, so good. We haven't had any issues," said Barry Hottmann.

"For me, I would say get here early. Even if you think it might not be a problem. I get anxious with the crowds and being on time, so definitely be here early," traveler Hannah Williams told ABC Action News.

Also something to think about for folks headed to Tampa International Airport is the major construction project underway. Administrators at the airport warn that travelers could run into a few delays trying to get to the terminal, so make sure to arrive early.
