On Tuesday, August 2, Hillsborough County Commissioners will vote to approve a high speed ferry service providing transportation for Tampa and St. Petersburg.
If approved by Hillsborough officials and then given final approval by Tampa's City Council, the service will run a 6 month pilot program back and forth from the Vinoy Basin across the bay to the Tampa Convention Center.
The program will run from November through next April, during tourist season. One potential benefit, more people on the waterway will mean less people on the roadways.
The other purpose of the program, officials say, is to see if the area can sustain a ferry service.
The cost of program is $1.4 million would be split evenly between St. Pete, Tampa, Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties.
