People who live and play in St. Pete won't have to wait much longer to see the city's multi-million dollar pier upgrade.
A major groundbreaking on the new St. Pete Pier happened shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Pretty soon, the area will look completely different. The process to create a new pier began three years ago. Construction is already underway.
The new $66 million dollar pier district will include a number of features including a fishing deck, restaurant, an event space, pavilion and even a splash pad.

ABC Action News spoke with a number of residents around town who are excited for what's to come.
"You can't have enough restaurants around the water. It's the perfect place for all of that to happen. It can't happen quick enough," said Zee Knight.
Work on the new pier project is expected to be completed by 2019.
