WIMAUMA, Fla. — Enterprising Latinas in Wimauma is helping women in the southern part of Hillsborough County learn new skills.

“We’ve been doing workforce training and coaching, but there is one thing that has been missing the whole time, money,” said CEO Liz Gutierrez.

Gutierrez said that all changed last week when they received a check from the Patel Foundation for $25,000. The money is helping fund a loan program for women entrepreneurs.

“We have a lot of women here with great ideas, but they haven’t had the capitol to get started,” said Gutierrez.

Tonya Burney is one of the recipients of the no interest loan. She is using the cash to start an Italian ice business.

“I’ve always had the entrepreneurial spirit, so this helped me get started,” said Burney.

Gutierrez said about eight women have already signed up to get help from her organization.
