SARASOTA, Fla. -- A man is hospitalized after authorities say he stole a car from a woman at a Sarasota shopping center and then crashing that stolen car on Wednesday.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office responded to a carjacking at the Parkway Collections Shopping Center near University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge Road on Tuesday night. Deputies say the carjacking suspect pushed the driver inside her 2006 Cadillac CTS and then forced her to drive him away from the scene.
The victim was then forced out of the car on Desoto Road and the suspect ran off with her car, deputies said.
The following day, the Sarasota Police Department spotted the stolen car a little after 3:30 p.m near 42nd Street and Tamiami Trail.
When officers tried to approach the driver of the stolen car, the driver tried to flee from the officers but crashed the stolen car with another car.
The driver, who was later identified by authorities as the carjacking suspect, was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
The driver of the other car is believed to be OK, police said.
Officials have not released the carjacking suspect's name. Both the carjacking incident and the crash remain under investigation, police said.
