Shirley Middlebrooks has been watching the construction of a new doctor's office on Dr. Martin Luther King Way in Sarasota for a year.
"I get more and more excited about it each day," said Middlebrooks.
Middlebrooks lives in the Newtown community of Sarasota. There is not one doctor's office in Newtown.
"Most people in Newtown go to the E.R. which is not good for your acute situations," said Dr. Karen Hamed.
Hamed worked with Sarasota Memorial Hospital to get a clinic started in Newtown. Residents will be able to use the clinic as their primary care physician instead of using the emergency room.
"It really will be great to have somebody right around here in the neighborhood," said Middlebrooks.
Three resident physicians will staff the clinic each day. They plan to see about a hundred patients per year.
"The doctors will really build a relationship with the people who live in this community," said Middlebrooks.
The clinic on Dr. Martin Luther King Way opens on Thursday.
