Rose Leverett said her five grandkids couldn't go to school in Sarasota on Monday after a break-in at the family's home.
"Somebody had came in and took all the food and school clothes we had been buying for the kids," said Leverett.
She said the kids weren't able to go to the first day of school.
"They didn't have anything to wear," said Leverett.
People in Leverett's neighborhood found out about the crime and started donating shoes, notebooks, and clothes on Tuesday morning.
"I mean it's sad that something like this could happen on the first day of school, everybody just wants to pitch in and give a hand," said neighbor Rashad Dawkins
Investigators are still looking into this crime.
