A fatal crash on Interstate 75 in Sarasota has left one dead on Sunday afternoon.

A Mazda going northbound on I-75 near Sumter Blvd was traveling through a construction area when the left side of the vehicle struck a construction barrel that was in the median.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver, 20 year-old Tyria Balcom, swerved right, then overcorrected and swerved left causing the vehicle to rotate counter clockwise in the southwest direction.

The right front of the vehicle then struck a second construction barrel causing the vehicle to continue 65 feet across the paved construction lane and striking a Volvo P7170 asphalt paver in the median.

FHP pronounced the passenger, 22-year-old Devontae Mitchell dead on the scene of the accident due to injuries sustained in the crash. Balcom is at the Sarasota Memorial hospital with critical injuries.
