The Palmetto Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one dead early Monday morning in Palmetto.
According to officials, the shooting happened around 2 a.m. at the intersection of 25th Street and Bayshore Road.
Officers originally responded to the 1800 block of 5th Avenue West at approximately 1:30 a.m. regarding a shooting that had just occurred. The complainant told police his son, Anthony Robinson, 32, had just fired shots into the front of the complainant's home.
Robinson left the home in a vehicle and the complainant gave police a description of the vehicle. Responding police officers spotted the suspect in the vehicle and attempted to stop him. Robinson refused to stop and officer pursued him. Robinson lost control of the vehicle and crashed at Bayshore Road and 8th Avenue West. He then ran from the vehicle with a handgun in his hand into the Memphis Cemetery. Palmetto Police officers chased him into the cemetery and once they entered the cemetery a shooting occurred. Chief Scott Tyler said FDLE is investigating the shooting.
"I just hope the community is patient and allows for the investigation take place before anyone jumps to a conclusion," said Tyler.
The police officers and responding deputies from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office provided first-aid to Robinson until EMS arrived. Robinson died at the hospital.
Two Palmetto Police officers were involved in the shooting.
Both police officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called to investigate the shooting. The Palmetto Police Department is hoping to have the investigation done in "a week or so."
