Bradenton man killed in hit-and-run; driver arrested

BRADENTON, Fla. — A driver in Manatee County is facing charges after leaving the scene of an accident that killed a man on a moped, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say Ralphie Cornier Moreno, 36, was riding a moped northbound on 9th Street East around 11:25 p.m. on Wednesday when he was hit by a truck.

Osvin Velasquez Varela, 37, was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident involving death, not having a valid license and not having vehicle insurance. He was also cited for failing to yield the right of way.

According to a press release, Varela was driving a 2004 F-150 southbound on 9th Street East, approaching the intersection of 301 Boulevard East. When Varela tried to make a left turn onto 301 he hit Moreno, the release says.

Moreno was thrown from his moped, according to the release.

Troopers say Varela drove away from the crash. He was located in a parking lot at 5004 301 Blvd. East by a Manatee County deputy who followed the debris trail from the crash scene, troopers say.
