LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. — Two boaters were rescued off Longboat Key last week after their boat capsized. Don Swanson said he was with his friend Tonda Reek when their boat started taking on water.
“I gave Tonda a life-jacket and she jumped in. I was calling for help when the boat rolls,” said Swanson.
He was able to swim to the surface. The two waited for nearly two hours in the water for the Coast Guard to rescue them.
“When you are in that water floating, you think about, 'I didn’t tell my parents I loved them, 'it’s hard,” said Swanson.
He said his insurance company is looking into why the boat started taking on water.
Swanson recommends all boaters hit the water with a safety plan.
