WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Most kids are spending their last month of summer out soaking up the sun or squeezing in as much fun as possible — but for one high school student, fun looks a little different.
16-year-old Tyler Spence is using the rest of his break to get other kids ready for back to school.
“It’s something more meaningful and could help a lot of people,” Spence said.
Tyler and his cousins have been collecting donations to put backpacks together for children in need.
So far, they’ve stuffed 48 backpacks with essential supplies — mainly for elementary-aged students.
Next, they plan on orchestrating bags for high schoolers who may need help as well.
“As a single mom, I know it can be difficult at times to purchase school supplies for your kids,” Sonya Spence, Tyler’s mom, said.
She’s been taking the kids shopping in order to fulfill the orders.
It costs about $15 to $20 per bag.
“Makes me really proud and happy to be his mom,” she said.
If you’d like to help, the Spence family has set up this Go Fund Me page to collect donations.
