LAKE WALES, Fla. — A Polk County family is dealing with losing their home in a fire, less than a week before Christmas.

Though firefighters could not save their home, they made sure not all was lost.

Sarah and Jeremy Garner woke up to their mobile home on fire, in Lake Wales early Saturday morning.

“It’s a nightmare to see our home like that and it doesn’t feel like it’s real,” said Sarah Garner.

The fire started outside on the deck and crawled up the side of their home and through the attic.

“We just decided just to go out the back window. My first thought was to get the farthest away from the fire, the safest way,” explained Jeremy Garner.

The young family is expecting their first child in two months and had already set up the nursery. When firefighters learned this, they moved quickly, removing all of its furniture and contents.

“It’s just scary, really scary to think about, we don’t even have a home right now, so not having a home to bring her home to is kind of sad,” Sarah said.

Most of the baby items were salvaged but two days before Christmas, the Garners are left picking up the pieces.

"Awful, it really is. From the littlest things that you take for granted every day, they’re gone. Sleeping in our own beds, showering in our own shower,” said Sarah.

A GoFundMepage has been set up, if you would like to help the family.
