WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A 77-year-old driver crashed his SUV into a Taco Bell on Saturday afternoon.

Police say Emmanuel Akowuah and his wife were parked immediately in front of the fast food restaurant at 1799 3rd Street SW in Winter Haven. Around 4:30 p.m., the couple decided to leave.

Akowuah told officers he placed the Nissan Rogue in reverse and then back into drive. At that point, the vehicle jumped the curb and crashed through the front of the building.

Police say the SUV ended up approximately ten feet inside of the Taco Bell. Neither Akowuah nor his wife were injured in the crash or when the Nissan's airbags deployed.

A customer was sitting in the table right where the SUV entered the building. Police say the customer avoided being injured when he got up to get more hot sauce seconds before the crash.

The Taco Bell sustained significant damage but police do not know a dollar amount estimate.
