A four-vehicle crash on the Courtney Campbell Causeway sent 8 people to the hospital Sunday night. The accident happened just before 7 p.m. on the west end of the Causeway near Damascus.

According to Clearwater Police three female patients, including a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old were transported to Tampa General Hospital. The 2-year-old was critically injured. Three patients, two women and one man, were transported to Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg. Two more patients were transported to Mease Countryside Hospital.

Investigators believe that the accident was caused by a distracted 23-year-old female driver who crashed into the back of a minivan that was stopped at the stoplight near Damascus. The first accident caused the minivan to crash into two other vehicles that had also been stopped at the stoplight.

Westbound lanes of the Courtney Campbell Causeway were closed overnight. As of 12:24 a.m., all lanes are open.
