A use of force investigation is underway in Pinellas County after a man lost consciousness during an arrest and is now in critical condition.

At about 10:15 p.m. Sunday, deputies were called to a residence on US Hwy. 19 N. in Clearwater.

Detectives say a man called 911 and said he needed police. Due to a language barrier and the fact that the man was intoxicated, 911 call takers were having trouble getting information from the caller.

As deputies got to the scene they were notified that someone had battered the man then left the residence on a bike.

Deputies stopped a man in the area fitting the description and riding a bicycle not far from the residence.

Initially deputies say the person was cooperative with deputies, but then ran from the scene.

Deputies chased him and deployed an "electronic control weapon" in an attempt to stop him.

They say he continued to resist and was handcuffed before losing consciousness.

Deputies rendered medical aid and paramedics responded to the scene.

The man was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Detectives say this is an open and ongoing investigation.
