ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A man in St. Petersburg is facing charges for sexually battering a 9-year-old child after his arrest on Friday, the sheriff's office says.

Don Thompson, 33, is accused of using an adult sex toy on the victim after telling her he needed to, "check to see if she was still a virgin," the sheriff's office said in a press release.

The alleged incidents happened in February and March. Deputies say the investigation began on June 18, after a family member of the victim notified St. Pete police.

Detectives interviewed the victim and say Thompson had familial authority over her. He is accused of using the adult sex toy on her then sexually battering her.

The victim told detectives Thompson also made her watch a pornographic video on his cellphone.

Detectives say they used various investigative techniques to corroborate the victim's claims.

Thomspon was arrested at his job on Friday and taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

He is charged with one count of sexual battery on a child less than 12 and one count of prohibition of certain acts in connection with obscenity.

Detectives say the investigation is ongoing.
