GULPORT, Fla. — An investigation is underway in Gulfport after an impaired driver crashed his scooter into a mailbox, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say 46-year-old Scott Houck was driving his 2015 KYMCO motor scooter northbound on 54th Street South around 2 a.m. when he struck the mailbox. A resident heard the crash and called 911.

Witnesses told authorities Houck left O'Maddy's Bar and Grill minutes before the crash. The sheriff's office says impairment does appear to be a factor in the accident.

Houck, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating.
