ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Pete police said a drug lab was the cause of an apartment explosion Wednesday afternoon.

Around 7 p.m., St. Pete police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the cause of the explosion was a drug lab in the apartment.

The residents in the other apartments were not allowed back in their homes due to volatile chemicals in the apartment. The Tampa Bomb Squad said it would not be safe for the evacuated residents to return to.

Police said shortly after 3 p.m., they responded to an apartment at Alta Mar at Broadwater, 3906 34th Terrace S., Apt. B.

When police arrived, they evacuated the 11 other apartments in the building as a precaution until the cause of the explosion was determined.

The Tampa Bomb Squad was called to the scene to clear it and make sure it was safe for residents to return.

Police said everyone inside the apartment cleared the area after the explosion. The building has been released and turned back over to the management company.

Police are working to determine if anyone was injured.
