A 25-year-old man has been charged DUI and colliding his vehicle into an unoccupied Florida Highway Patrol cruiser at the scene of previous traffic accident on State Road 54 in Wesley Chapel early Sunday.

No injuries were reported, but the patrol cruiser, a  2015 Dodge Charger, was damaged when it was struck from behind by a 2002 Chevy Corvette.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday on S.R. 54 near Vandine Road in Wesley Chapel, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The Corvette, driven by Kyran Pittner, 25, of Wesley Chapel, was traveling eastbound on S.R. 54 in the center left turn lane approaching Vandine Road.

Meanwhile, a marked FHP cruiser with its emergency lights activated was parked in the center left turn lane on S.R. 54 protecting the scene of a previous traffic accident being cleared from the road.

The Corvette failed to stop and collided into the rear of the FHP patrol vehicle. The trooper who parked the patrol vehicle was not identified.

Pittner was later arrested and taken to the Pasco County Jail. The Florida Highway Patrol said his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
