NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- The New Port Richey city council has approved the police chief's proposal to purchase active shooter kits for all of the department's officers.

Tampa Bay area schools make security changes for final days of school year following school shooting

This comes on the heels of the recent school shootings in Parkland, Florida and Santa Fe, Texas.

Police Chief Kim Bogart says the kits will cost $33,975. All 44 officers will receive one.

The kits will include armor, helmets, tactical goggles, and other tools. Chief Bogart hopes to have the kits by the end of the summer, so all of officers have them in time for next school year.

The money for the kits is coming from the departments forfeiture fund. That's money officers collected from drug deals and other crimes.
