The holidays can be hectic but if you rush too fast, you may just spot flashing lights in your rear view mirror.

Some drivers in Largo had that experience, but instead of a ticket, the officers handed out something no one expected.

“Rather than a speeding ticket, we’d like to give you a ticket to enjoy your holiday this year, which is a voucher for a free ham at Publix up to ten pounds,” Largo police officer Jerry Hunt said.

He may not have a beard and may not cruise around in a sleigh, but a local business owner donating 50 ham coupons makes Officer Hunt’s job a magical one, like when he pulled over a single father of two.

“It was just a great feeling to know that while he had made a mistake you know me making contact with him wasn’t going to jeopardize his daughter’s Christmas,” Hunt said.

Just one way to spread Christmas cheer and bring the Largo community closer together.

To get something for the holiday, yeah, rather than having to pay for that citation,” Hunt said. “It allows people to see that yeah we’re humans and we’re out here doing a job.”
