TAMPA, Fla. -- The family of a mother and daughter killed by street racers says their tragedy has been turned into action.

A large group gathered along Bayshore Boulevard Thursday night to honor Jessica Raubenolt and her daughter, Lillia. One year ago, investigators say the two were killed in a crash while crossing Bayshore near Knights Avenue.

"You always think this kind of thing will happen to somebody else's family, not yours," said Jessica's uncle, John Reisinger.

One year after the tragedy, Reisinger believs the City of Tampa is moving in the right direction to better prevent another deadly pedestrian versus vehicle incident.

City officials have lowered the speed limit, added crosswalks and flashing beacons, and made driving lanes more narrow.

"The improved safety will hopefully save lives," said Reisinger. "Their death is hopefully not in vain."
