TAMPA, Fla. — Local car dealers and the National Safety Council have declared May as 'Airbag Recall Repair Month' to encourage drivers to stay safe.

Over 100,000 vehicles in Tampa, and 1.1 million in the state, have unrepaired or recalled airbags. The safety council and local Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep® and Ram Truck dealers urge drivers of ANY automobile to check for an airbag recall on their vehicle and schedule a repair appointment in May.

When airbags are exposed to heat and humidity they can transform from life-saving devices to life-threatening ones. According to the safety council, 27% of all drivers in Florida are impacted by recalled airbags.

Florida drivers can get their airbags repaired for free in three easy steps:

1. Locate your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN).
Drivers should check the driver’s side dashboard or their registration and insurance documents.

2. Enter your VIN into CheckToProtect.org.
Drivers will know within seconds if they have a recall.

3. Schedule a FREE repair appointment at your local dealership.
Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep®, and Ram dealers have parts in stock and technicians on hand all month.

Repairs take about an hour to complete, and many dealers are open extended hours and can provide complimentary transportation while vehicles are being repaired.
