HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — The Hillsborough County School District is sharing the results of an experiment showing just how distracting cell phones can be in the classroom after a teacher in Colorado posted it on social media.

The District shared the post on social media, asking "Are cell phones a distraction in class?" after a Colorado math teacher asked her class of 23 students to place their cell phones on their desks and mark on the board every time they received a text or a notification. The experiment lasted 30-minutes and in that amount of time, the board filled up with marks.

The students received 58 texts, 182 social media notifications and 28 other notifications, a total of 268 disruptions in half an hour.

After seeing the results, the teacher wrote "Parents, PLEASE find a way to block students' access to these disruptions during the school day."
