TAMPA - If the kids are asking for a dog this Christmas and you’re not sure the family’s ready, consider “renting” one.
"Just our dogs, can go out anywhere from 2 hours to 2 weeks," Lauryn Postligone said. Lauryn is with the Hillsborough Pet Resource Center which has the Foster Express Challenge running now through January 20.
"Maybe then the people fall in love with them and decide they want to keep them," she said.
That’s exactly what happened to Kayla Bosciano and her new dog Sabra.
"Yea, yep it worked," Kayla said with a laugh.
"I figured I'd take her home get her out of the shelter for a couple of hours, get her to relax. I walked by she seemed so upset just sitting the cage," Bosciano said.
But Sabra never made it back to the shelter, just right to Kayla’s home. And as a recent cancer survivor this dog also went right to her heart.
"It's definitely helped me get through everything and getting better with her because she was such a mess when I found her too, it was nice," she said.
If you don’t end up adopting, just getting these dogs out of the shelter for a day or even an hour means so much to them and the shelter.
