TAMPA, Fla. — Deputies helped to rescue a driver from his sinking car in Sunday night.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office responded to the call just before 6:00 p.m.

Authorities say the car was traveling northbound on Himes Avenue when it went straight through the Busch Blvd intersection and into White Trout Lake.

Sheriff's Lt. Doug White said one of the car's windows was open, causing the car to quickly submerge in the water. It ended up stuck in the mud about five-and-a-half feet down.

Crews pulled the driver out of the car despite not being able to get the car doors to open.

Paramedics transported the driver to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. No one else was in the car at the time of the crash.

The reason why the driver went through the intersection and into the lake is under investigation.
