TAMPA, Fla. -- A Hillsborough leader believes the role of the county's Emergency Policy Group (EPG) may need to be scaled back.

The group was originally started to handle emergencies like hurricanes and it has been handling the response to COVID-19 for several months.

Hillsborough County Chairman Les Miller Jr. says he intends to have a discussion about the future of EPG at next week's Board of County Commissioners' meeting.

Miller wants commissioners to consider whether the group should be left as is or if it should be eliminated entirely.

"The county commission has more delegate authority to do it than I think the EPG does," Miller said. "I’m not saying do we get rid of the EPG at this point. That’s will come out in the discussion. Just my thoughts at this point."
