The Connected Vehicle Program is coming to Tampa. Members of the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority said they need about 1,600 drivers to sign up. One of the perks is users will get 30-percent off tolls on the Selmon.

“We will install the technology into a user's car and then they will get real time traffic updates and updates about wrong way drivers,” said spokesperson Mike Wacaht.

The goal is to reduce traffic crashes and congestion in the downtown area.

Shari Callahan has been using the program for about three weeks.

"The first time it goes off you’re like oh whats that peeping noise, oh I’m too close to that car, or that car ahead of me is stopping faster than anticipated,” said Callahan.

Designers said the program is being updated with new alerts ten times per second, making it much more reliable than traffic apps that are currently on the market.
